Summer Camp Week 5- July 20, 2015     Lesson Plans
Children worked on a culmination project for the end of camp which consisted of building structures from recycled materials. To begin they drew a blue print of what they wanted their structure to be. After selecting materials and completing construction, children dictated a description of it s the teacher typed it up. Finally each child shared their finished project with the class during meeting time and the completed projects were displayed in the Great Room showcases for families and friends to admire.

Children learned the word "efficiency" by visiting the A.V. Williams building where Bryan Quinn, Director of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Institute for Systems Research, helped them demonstrate which type of bulb was easiest to light by peddling a bicycle run generator. Several types of bulbs were tested.

Interns from the Office of Sustainability came and talked to the children about saving energy and gave them some beads to make a bracelet that would change colors in the sun. On Friday campers took a UMD shuttle to "LEAFHouse" an award winning solar house designed by UMD architect students.

Keeping Track and Interpreting Data

During the six weeks of summer camp the Green Room children have been counting the pieces of trash collected after lunch. They have been carefully graphing this data and discussing the fluctuations in the amount of trash. The goal is to have zero pieces. Can it happen? Hopefully next week! Here a camper reports the amount collected on the message board for everyone to see.
