I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). Prior to UMD, I obtained my PhD in Communication with a minor in Information Science at Cornell. As a scholar in Human-Computer Intearction (HCI), I draw on social science theories, behavioral research methods, and system design practices to promote liberated language use for all. My research has been generously supported by multiple seed funds from UMD and received the NSF CRII, Fairness in AI, and CAREER awards.

The primary focus of my research agenda is on multilingual communication, with the goal of enabling human interactions across language boundaries to function as naturally as monolingual exchanges. This work contributes to HCI and related areas (e.g., Human-Centered AI) by a) reigorously deepening theoretical knowledge about human language use; b) critially define the role of technology in relation to human language users; and c) responsiblity guiding the future of the evolving human-technology interplay.

Many of my recent projects are carried out in close collaboration with amazing students and colleagues from the College of Information (INFO; tenure home), the the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS; joint appointment), the Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS; serving member), and the Language Science Center (affiliated member). In addition to my core research on multilingual communication, I also enjoy exploring other HCI topics centered on computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW).
